A 2-year-old child drowned Thursday morning in a swimming pool in Hermiston, according to the Hermiston Police Department.

Cpt. Travis Eynon said officers were dispatched around 9:49 a.m. to 1214 E. Main St., after an emergency call was placed about a child drowning. A family member began performing CPR and Umatilla County Fire District 1 EMS units were already heading to the scene.

When the officers arrived, they found CPR and other lifesaving measures were in progress.

“We learned the child was found in an in-ground swimming pool after a short search when she went missing from the yard,” Eynon said.

Despite the best efforts of the family member, EMS and Emergency Department personnel at Good Shepherd Medical Center, Eynon said the child could not be saved.

“There does not appear to be anything suspicious about this event,” Eynon said. “At this point it does appear to be a case of accidental drowning.”

No names are being released at this time, said Eynon. The child and her parents were from Utah and were in Hermiston visiting family.

“Tragedies such as this are obviously painful for the family,” said Eynon. “They are also hard on our first responders as well as our entire community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family during this difficult time.”
