BMCC Rodeo Teams Rise in National Rankings

The Blue Mountain Community College men’s and women’s rodeo teams continued to dominate the Northwest Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association with standout performances at two rodeos in Ellensburg, Wash., April 22-23. The men’s team came in first place at both rodeos, while the women took second place in the April 22 event and first on April 23.

The weekend results keep both teams at the top of the leaderboard for the Northwest Regional standings of NIRA, with the men 3,779 points ahead of second-ranked Walla Walla Community College and the women 1,286 points ahead of second-ranked Central Washington University. The weekend’s results also bumped both teams up in the rankings nationally, with the men now sitting in first place by 1,904 points ahead of the second-ranked team, and the women in second place nationally, just 1,578 points behind the leader.

BMCC’s Jared Parke once again came out on top for the men’s all-around during the April 25 rodeo, while Jordan Tye, Parke and Ryan Verling nabbed the first, second and third place rankings, respectively, for the men’s all-around during the April 26 rodeo. Danyelle Williams came in second in the women’s all-around on April 25, and then came back to take first on April 26.

Other leaders for the weekend included Kenneth Haworth and Tyler Potter, who placed first and second, respectively, in bareback riding on both days. In tie down roping, Parke landed in first place on April 25, and then Tye, Chase Hansen, Parke and Nic Nyman took home the first, second, third and fourth place rankings in the event on April 26. Nyman also landed in first place in steer wrestling on April 25.

The BMCC women dominated barrel racing on both days, with Danyelle Williams taking home first on April 25, and then Trey Tucker, Tayler Eng, Quincy Pendergrass and Jessica Lewis securing the first through fourth place spots, respectively, on April 26. Williams also took home first place in breakaway roping and Lauren Leyva came out on top in goat tying on April 25.

Next up, the Northwest Intercollegiate Rodeo Finals Association will host the BMCC College Rodeo this Friday and Saturday, April 29-30, at the Umatilla County Fairgrounds in Hermiston. Slack is at 10 a.m. both days (with $5 admission), while evening rodeo performances begin at 6:30 p.m. both days. Rodeo tickets are $10 at the gate. Proceeds from the event go towards scholarships for BMCC rodeo student-athletes and the BMCC rodeo program.
