A 4H leader, mother, wife and volunteer from Hermiston has been appointed as the 2014 chaperone for the Umatilla County Fair Court.

Shirley Huston has been selected to guide and supervise the young women who serve as royalty for the annual county fair and appear at several parades, rodeos and other traditional county-wide celebrations.

Huston submitted her court chaperone application with the goal of supporting a program that has had a positive impact on her community.

She has volunteered with 4-H and FFA, and has been part of agricultural and ranching in the Northwest for most of her life and has lived in Umatilla County since 1975. Huston’s life has revolved around 4H and FFA with her children and husband Jim. Her daughter was on the Umatilla County Fair Court in 1986.

The official kickoff for the fair is the first Saturday in August, but Huston will be busy long before that as she assists in all aspects of court life ranging from royal appearances to behind-the-scenes work.
