Meet the 2014 Umatilla County Fair Court

Four Umatilla County high school students have been named to serve on the 2014 Umatilla County Fair Court.

The newest court members and their families were introduced to the Fair Board at its annual work session held at the Stafford Hansell Government Center.

A Fair Court Queen will be chosen at the annual Appreciation Dinner in early February.

Meet the 2014 Umatilla County Fair Court:

Kirstin Ottmar
Kirstin Ottmar
Kirstin Ottmar is in the 11th grade in Hermiston. She is 16 years old and lives with her parents, Brent and Heather Ottmar, and her sister, Emma. Since 2010, Kirstin has been in 4-H showing three species of livestock, five different home ec projects and a dairy heifer for FFA in 2012.

She has received awards for the most units at school, the Presidential Award, scripture memory, and highest GPA. Kirstin has been on the dean’s list and honor roll and has been honored at the Hermiston Breakfast of Champions and has received the Jack Correa Memorial Buckle for 4-H swine.

Gymnastics, theater, children’s ministries, animals, volleyball and choir are just a few of the Kirstin’s hobbies. She enjoys spending time with her youth group, family and friends, especially while hunting, and riding ATV. Kirstin is grounded in her faith and her passion for God. She applied for the 2014 Umatilla County Fair Court in order to gain experience in new situations and to help people.

Taryn Coffman
Taryn Coffman
Taryn Coffman is a senior in Athena. She is 17 years old and lives with her parents, Shawn and Kerri Coffman, and her siblings, Megan and Amie. For the past eight years, Taryn has shown market beef, sheep and swine at the Umatilla County Fair. She has also participated in archery for 4-H and the Style Review.

Some of her most prestigious accomplishments include 2012 co-female athlete for Weston-McEwen High School, and earning a 4.0 GPA over years. She has been recognized as a scholar athlete nine times along with receiving numerous softball, basketball and volleyball awards.

She holds an FFA Greenhand Degree, Chapter Degree and State Degree. Taryn has received such awards as Grand Champion for FFA swine showman, outstanding swine exhibitor, champion feeder hog, champion junior exhibitor and showman and has received the Irving Mann trophy. She volunteers as a youth referee and coach for several youth sports teams. Taryn wants to attend Washington State University in order to obtain a degree in the veterinary field to open her own practice one day. Taryn enjoys spending time with family and meeting new people.

As a member of the 2014 Umatilla County Fair Court, Taryn looks forward to sharing ideas and contributing to the community as a team.

Elizabeth Olsen
Elizabeth Olsen
Elizabeth Olsen is in the 10th grade in Pendleton. She is 15 years old and lives with her parents, Douglas and Mary Olsen, and her sister, Sarah. She has been in 4-H for the past seven years, attending the Umatilla County Fair and Milton-Freewater Junior shows.

he has been the Salt and Pepper 4-H club’s vice president since 2010 and is currently enrolled in three 4-H projects – rabbits, furry critters and veterinary science. Elizabeth has also enjoyed exhibiting posters and photographs in the Umatilla County Fair. Since 2009, Elizabeth has been on the honor roll and received numerous first place and grand champion ribbons for her photos, educational displays, rabbits and posters.

She is currently on the dean’s list at Blue Mountain Community College in the dual credit program and has received the 2013 Umatilla County Veterinary Science Project medal in 4-H. Elizabeth enjoys helping out in her community through activities such as doing yard work for nursing homes. She also enjoys reading, playing her violin and spending time with her animals and her family. Elizabeth hopes to become a small animal veterinarian.

Katie Sotelo
Katie Sotelo
Katie Sotelo is a senior in Milton-Freewater. Her parents are Missy Miller and Frank Sotelo. Katie has been involved in 4-H and FFA for nine years and started showing pigs and sewing in the fourth grade. She has participated in livestock judging, swine showmanship and swine confirmation.

Katie has held an office in FFA for the past four years and has exhibited at all five county livestock shows for the past nine years. As an FFA member, Katie has been awarded with the Greenhand FFA Degree, Star Greenhand FFA award, Chapter FFA Degree, Blue Mountain FFA District Outstanding Treasurer, Oregon State FFA Degree, Star Junior FFA Award and East Oregonian Student of the Week.

Her love for the Umatilla County Fair began when she was too young to participate. Katie’s family has been imbedded in the fair which meant that Katie spent her most of her younger years camping on the fairgrounds during fair week. Katie also enjoys basketball, cheerleading, spending time with her brother and friends and interacting with youth. Katie plans on attending Oregon State University and majoring in early childhood studies.
