With mushroom hunting season under way, the U.S. Forest Service is reminding people of guidelines for gathering on agency lands.

A permit is not required to harvest, possess, or transport less than one gallon of mushrooms in Oregon or less than five gallons in Washington. Mushrooms harvested free of charge on national forests are not to be sold, bartered, or given away.

A permit is required for people 18 and older who harvest to sell.

Commercial picking is prohibited in wilderness areas, and an industrial camping permit is required for commercial harvesters and buyers on national forest system lands. Permits can be obtained at the district office on the national forest where the harvest is planned.
