The Hermiston School District will open its doors for the 2013-14 school year on Monday, Aug. 26. One of the changes to the school year is a new Wednesday student schedule, which takes effect immediately.

The new schedule incorporates a late start for middle and high school students and an early release for all elementary students every Wednesday.

The Board of Education approved the 45-minute adjustment to provide a dedicated time for teacher training and professional development.

“Regular, job-embedded professional development is a critical element in our efforts to improve student learning and achievement,” said Assistant Superintendent Bryn Browning.

As a result, middle and high school students will start their student day at approximately 9:10 a.m. on Wednesdays (instead of approximately 8:25 a.m.), and elementary schools will release at 1:45 p.m. on Wednesdays (instead of 2:30 p.m.). The Wednesday kindergarten schedule will also be modified; it will run from 8 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. for the morning sessions and from 11:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. for the afternoon sessions, every week.
