Blake is noted for combining traditional and contemporary styles in his dramatic, colorful paintings of western themes. As a child, he moved around the west following his father on the rodeo circuit and working on ranches, including a stop in Buckeye, Arizona where he picked up his nick name. Blake’s experience as a working cowboy was tempered by the influence of his mother, an artist who created murals and painted portraits to supplement the family income. After a stint as a scene painter in Hollywood, Buckeye returned to his love of showing cutting horses and creating fine art; setting up a studio in Augusta, Montana for many years before relocating to Weatherford, Texas.

Blake’s work is featured in many important collections including the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, the DenverArt Museum, the 3M Museum, the Harmsen Collection and the C.M. Russell Museum. He has been the subject of numerous retrospectives as well as being featured in countless magazine articles and publications including the book, Buckeye Blake: Art on the Western Front.

Blake feels honored by being selected as the Pendleton Round-Up’s 2017 poster artist.

“As a painter, capturing the bright colors, rich history, vivid action and legendary drama of the Pendleton Round-Up is a unique
opportunity,” he said. “I’m excited to create a painting which captures the Let’er Buck spirit of the world famous Pendleton Round-Up.”

Echoing Blake’s comments, Round-Up President Bill Levy noted, “We are extremely happy to have Buckeye Blake as our poster artist. His style is a perfect match with the color, drama, history and celebration of the west that is the essence of the Pendleton Round-Up. Our fans will love Buckeye’s poster.”
