The Hermiston School District administration announced on Wednesday that it has removed, and is replacing, “zombie apocalypse” materials recently used for an Armand Larive Middle School exploratory reading class.

“The use of zombie-related materials is unfortunate and was not approved in accordance with district curricular policies,” said Superintendent Dr. Fred Maiocco. “We extend our regrets to anyone offended by their use.”

The district said the topic and associated materials were not properly reviewed nor sanctioned by district officials as required by policy. The district added that while zombies may be a contemporary topic, the inclusion of zombie-related materials was deemed inappropriate for middle school students and has been replaced with age and content-appropriate materials.
