Search and Rescue Team Locates Pair of Lost Grouse Hunters

The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office received a report of two lost grouse hunters south of Pilot Rock. The two, a 67-year-old Hermiston resident and a 62-year-old hunter from Corvallis, called 911 around 4:48 p.m.

The hunters, a 67 year old male from Hermiston and a 62 year old male from Corvallis, called 911 and reported they had become lost on foot while attempting to return to their parked vehicle. Cell phone contact with the hunters had provided SAR with good GPS coordinates to begin the search, according to the sheriff’s office.

As SAR members were responding, Sgt. Dwight Johnson was able to contact the hunters by cell phone again. The hunters had started a fire and said they would remain at that location until found.

At approximately 8:39pm, SAR members located the hunter’s parked vehicle and from there a search began to find the two hunters. At about 8:54 pm, both hunters were found and safely escorted to their vehicle.

The sheriff’s office provided a Google Earth link to show where the two were located.
