During the weeks between Aug. 21 and Sept. 3, 2017, the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office, along with other law enforcement agencies across the nation, participated in extra traffic patrols and enforcement in the county with an emphasis on seat belts/child restraints, texting, and speed violations.

Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office provided Umatilla County with over 38 additional hours of traffic enforcement and emphasis patrols, and issued over 20 warnings and citations for traffic-related offenses. The goals were to increase traffic safety by educating the public about the importance of seat belts and child restraints, and the dangers of texting while driving and speeding.  On Aug. 21, deputies also provided additional traffic control throughout Umatilla County in conjunction with the total solar eclipse.

This effort was funded by the Oregon Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as part of their annual “Click It or Ticket” campaign.
