Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office Warns of Mail Theft in Hermiston

The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office is asking Hermiston residents to be on the lookout for suspicious activity after at least 40 residents in the east part of town were the victims of mail theft.

According to the sheriff’s office, on Dec. 5, a sheriff’s deputy responded to a call regarding a report of mail scattered all over the ground in the area of North Ott and East Loop Road in Hermiston. The mail included several envelopes that had been opened, including those with holiday cards and checks.

On Dec. 12, three different callers reported finding mail in the areas of Sagebrush/Baggett, Alpine/Klaus, E. Punkin Center/Tabor, and scattered along E. Theater between N.E. 10th Street and N. Townsend, Baggett Lane, Sagebrush Road and N. Townsend. Like the previousl case, the envelopes containing items of value were opened and the contents removed.

The sheriff’s office determined that there were at least 40 victims of mail theft. The victims have been notified, as well the postmaster in Hermiston. The mail has been returned to the post office to be redelivered to the victims. Residents are asked to be on the lookout for suspicious persons in the areas east of Hermiston.
