The Pendleton Contra Dance Community will hold a free contra dance lesson on Saturday, Oct. 5.
The lesson will takes place at 1 p.m. at the Pendleton Center for the Arts (PCA). No partner is needed, and the lesson and dances are family friendly.
Contra dancing has its origins in a range of folk traditions, including English country dance and Appalachian dancing. It’s a form of social dancing that one can attend without a partner. Dancers are paired up in long lines and follow the instructions of a caller. At dances, callers teach the sequence of the dance steps before the music starts. The dances feature live music by local musicians.
The Pendleton Contra Dance Community will hold dances at PCA on the second Saturdays through June 2019. The next dance is Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.
