U.S. Rep. Greg Walden (R-Hood River) released information on the individual payments that most Americans will receive as soon as the middle of April thanks to the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

Most Americans will receive a payment of $1,200 per individual, $2,400 per couple, and $500 per child directly to their bank account via direct deposit. The IRS recently released information about how to access the benefits for those who do not file taxes.

“The impact of the coronavirus can be felt in every corner of our nation – every person and family, every sector of the economy,” Walden said. “Our way of life has been truly shaken, but not our resolve. We can weather this storm, but we all need a little help. Many Americans – sick or not – will need to stay home from work. Many will need testing and care. Our state and local health care providers and first responders are on the front lines of this fight. I have a message for all of you: help is on the way, and more is coming.”

The following are frequently asked questions about the relief payments:

Who will receive a payment?

You may have heard conflicting information about who is eligible for these payments. Seniors on Social Security and Veterans receiving benefits from VA ARE eligible for this payment.  As long as your income does not exceed $99,000 for individuals or $198,000 for married couples, you can receive a payment.

Do I need to do anything to receive my payment?

Those on Social Security who do not file taxes DO NOT need to file anything to receive this new payment.

Those who receive disability compensation, a pension, or survivor benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs WILL need to submit information to the IRS to receive this payment. You can provide this information through the IRS’s website here.

Low-income individuals with a gross income between $12,200 for individuals and $24,400 for married couples that do not file taxes, WILL need to submit information to the IRS to receive this payment. You can provide this information through the IRS’s website here.

Unfortunately, the number of scammers taking advantage of the COVID-19 crisis has seen an uptick. The Treasury Department will NOT ask you to pay anything for this payment and will not contact you for your bank account information. If you are contacted by someone claiming to be from the government asking for this type of information, please report it to www.ftc.gov/complaint. You can learn more about how to protect yourself from these types of scams here.

  1. Can someone who was 17 on last year’s income tax receive a refund. She was counted on someone else’s taxes.
Can someone who was counted on someone else’s taxes who is now 20 years old and doesn’t work recurve a stimulas check?

    • Yes as long as nobody has claimed you as a dependent on their taxes. If you receive your SSI by check then you’ll receive your stimulus the same way. If you have dependents then you’ll need to go to the IRS website and follow the directions for SSI recipients with dependents in order to receive the $500 for each eligible dependent
