Umatilla students have been reading and writing frantically to prepare for the 2014 Cavalcade of Authors. For one Umatilla student, that writing has already paid off.

Cavalcade of Authors is a Tri Cities event that connects secondary students with published Young Adult authors through workshops, book signings and personal interaction. To participate, students must read at least one book by four different authors participating in Cavalcade.

Umatilla is the only Oregon school to participate in the event, which draws hundreds of students from schools across southeastern Washington.

In addition to the workshop event, students from all participating schools are also encouraged to enter a short story contest each year. In the 2014 contest, Umatilla High School student Katelyn Wheeler took third place in the high school contest.

“This is a big deal as this event is growing and growing,” said Tammy Fisher, a teacher at Clara Brownell Middle School. “There are always over 1,000 kids in attendance and any student from any participating school may submit a story. Katelyn is an awesome writer and we can all be very proud of her.”

Wheeler is the second Umatilla student to place in the contest. Last year, Clara Brownell Middle School student Maria Moreno took second in the middle school division of the 2013 Cavalcade of Authors Writing Contest.
