Due to ongoing vandalism, the city of Hermiston is removing the plastic toddler play equipment at McKenzie Park.

According to the Hermiston Parks and Recreation Department, the porous nature of the plastic makes graffiti removal challenging, and repeated incidents of burning and melting have created hazardous conditions for children. The equipment was scheduled for removal this winter, but due to recent reports from the community and an opening in our parks maintenance schedule, the city expedited the project.

The city is currently seeking funding to replace the toddler play area with a more durable structure. Additionally, the plastic bouncy bridge on the large play structure has been removed and a new solid steel bridge has been constructed and will be installed soon. This will offer a more durable and safe play feature for children.

In an effort to prevent vandalism, cameras have been installed on The Arc building in McKenzie Park to monitor the area.

We understand the importance of safe places to play in our community. The city encourages members of the community to help protect our parks by reporting any suspicious activitye. Notifications and concerns can be made on the Parks & Recreation Department website.
