The Hermiston School District didn’t have to look too far to find its new athletic director for Hermiston High School.

The district announced on Friday that Irrigon High School’s athletic director will be recommended to serve in the same role for HHS. Israel (Blaine) Ganvoa was chosen among four finalists and from a pool of 31 applicants to take over for current Athletic Director Mike Kay.

The school district announced in April that, beginning July 1, Kay would assume administrative oversight of district operations including maintenance, custodial, grounds, warehouse, food service, transportation and safety operations. Kay has served as the district’s athletics and activities director for the past 10 years. Kay was in charge of overseeing the hiring of a new Hermiston High School athletic director.

“We are excited to have Blaine join us,” said Kay. “His ability to connect with students and provide leadership are two of his greatest attributes. We look forward to him continuing the growth of our athletic and activities programs.”

Ganvoa has been athletic director for ISH for the past six years, as well as coach and teacher at the high school. He is currently completing his National Athletic Director Certificate Program. He was recognized as the OSAA Rookie Athletic Director of the Year in 2008, and he earned the Oregon Athletic Director Leadership award in 2012.

Ganvoa won’t officially become the HHS athletic director until the Hermiston School Board approves his selection at its Monday, June 9 meeting.
