Theodore L. “Ted” Martin, longtime Stanfield resident, died on June 30, 2014 in Hermiston at the age of 84.
He was born on Feb. 25, 1930 in Pendleton to Marion and Sarah Vaughn Martin. Ted was raised in Pendleton, Ukiah, and then Stanfield. He graduated from Stanfield High School in the class of 1948.
He then joined the Air Force and served during the occupation of Japan and the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1952 as a senior weapons mechanic and then returned to Stanfield. Ted was united in marriage to Yvonne Krause on July 17, 1953 in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho. He worked at the Umatilla Army Depot in many different capacities over the years including general foreman and tool crib officer. Ted retired from the depot in 1985 and went to work as the sexton at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Stanfield where he worked until 2005. He and Yvonne owned and operated Y & I Ceramics in Stanfield for many years. Ted was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed bingo, trips to Wildhorse, fishing, hunting, camping, traveling, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Sarah Powney, Stanfield; son, Steven Charles Martin, Echo; brother, William Martin, Stanfield; sister, Francis Bowman, Hermiston; 4 grandchildren, Heather, Billy, Kevin & Desere; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ted was preceded in death by his wife, Yvonne Martin; his parents; sister, Evelyn Richards; and a brother, Bob Martin.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at 11 a.m., at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Stanfield.
