Man Hospitalized After Shootout with Police

Milton-Freewater police shot a man Thursday evening after he opened fire on the officers following a high-speed pursuit.

According to the Umatilla County District Attorney’s Office, Milton-Freewater police stopped a 2007 Ford Focus around 7:15 p.m. The driver of the Ford sped off with police in pursuit. During the chase, the suspect opened fire on the pursuing officers. After police were able to disable the vehicle, the suspect got out of his car and continued to fire at the officers, who shot the man in a lower extremity.

The suspect was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Walla Walla with what is believed to be a non-life threatening injury.

As required by law, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave. The Oregon State Police are leading the investigation into the incident.

Assisting the OSP in the investigation are the Criminal Services Division, Pendleton Police Department, Hermiston Police Department, Boardman Police Department, Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office, Morrow County Sheriff’s Office, Walla Walla Police Department, and Walla Walla County Sheriff’s Office.

No other information was given by the district attorney’s office.
