A woman was arrested over the weekend after stabbing a Hermiston man in the neck.

According to the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office, Vanessa Logman, 30, of Meacham, stabbed Bill Porter in the neck while they were driving in Porter’s vehicle.

Porter and a female passenger stopped to give Logman and her four children a ride after seeing them walking along E. Birch Creek Road on Saturday. Logman and the children were riding in the back seat when she allegedly stabbed Porter in the neck without warning, according to the UCSO.

Porter managed to safely pull over and he and his passenger, along with a passerby, subdued Logman until police arrived. Porter received 11 stitches for his knife wound at St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton. His female passenger suffered minor injuries while trying to secure Logman.

According to the UCSHO, Logman, who has a history of mental illness, reported that she wanted out of the vehicle and cut Porter to make him stop. Porter and his passenger, however, say no such request was made.

Logman was lodged in the Umatilla County Jail on charges including attempted murder and second-degree assault. Umatilla Tribal Children and Family Services took her children into protective custody. The case is under further investigation and will be forwarded to the Umatilla County District Attorney’s Office.
