Snow Blankets Region, Schools Cancel Classes

Several new inches of snow fell throughout the region on Wednesday, forcing the cancellation of school in Umatilla and Morrow counties. The good news? The National Weather Service says no new precipitation is on the immediate horizon.

As much as 4-5 inches of snow blanketed the area Wednesday afternoon and evening, adding to the several inches that was already on the ground. Snow plow trucks were busy throughout the night trying to keep ahead of the snow, but with little luck.

Classes were canceled today for the Hermiston, Morrow County, Stanfield, Umatilla and Echo school districts as well as all Blue Mountain Community College locations.

This is the second snow day in a week. On Wednesday, the Hermiston School District announced that last Friday’s snow day will impact the school calendar, pushing back the final day of school for all students as well as forcing the district to re-schedule graduation from June 3 to June 10 to make up for classes missed due to inclement weather.

And while snow is not in the immediate forecast, plenty of cold temperatures are. The weather service calls for a high today of 26 with a low of 10. On Friday, the high isn’t expected to rise above 20 degrees with an overnight low of a bone-chilling minus 4 degrees. Saturday’s high is forecast to be no more than 14 with an overnight low of 8 degrees.

Temperatures are expected to climb above 30 by Monday with even some sun shining down.
