He was born Dec. 30, 1927 in Maryland to Dilver and Stella Payne Brown. He served in the United States Army Air Corps as a fireman in the Philippines during World War II until his honorable discharge. He was united in marriage to Betty R. Hodge on June 1, 1947. They moved their family from Virginia to Hermiston in August, 1961, where he had lived since. He worked for Stewart’s Market for many years as a cashier, stocking the shelves, in maintenance, or anywhere he was needed. He later worked for IGA for several years. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, cutting firewood, mounting antlers for friends and family, and going for drives in the mountains. He cherished the time he was able to spend with his family, passing the love of the outdoors on to them. He was always there to help his children and lend a hand to help anyone wherever he could. He was recognized earlier this year in an East Oregonian article: “. . . who at the age of 89 was out with his tractor clearing everyone’s driveways.” He made many friends over the years with many of the farmers and ranchers on Big and Little Buttercreek. He would often stop by and share stories and a Mt Dew with them. He was very thankful and considered himself very rich that the Lord blessed him with such a wonderful family.
He is survived by his children: Tom and wife Kristy, Larry and wife Sharon, Danny and wife Cathy, Darlene and husband Matt, Susan and husband Jim, and Carolyn; sister, Marylou Davis; brothers: Maynard, Dale, and Duane Brown; grandchildren: Darci, Jeromie, Dwayne, Jessica, Maranda, Katie, Nikkie, and Justin; numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; grandchildren: Ketra, Rebecca, and Rob; a great granddaughter, Kara; a sister, Edith Blankenship; and brothers, Merle Brown and Lavone Brown.
A memorial service with military honors will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Hermiston First Christian Church.
