A handful of streets around Hermiston will get a little extra TLC this summer with “Slurry Seal” projects as part of the city’s Street Preservation Program.

Orchard Avenue will be the street with the highest impact to motorists, and several downtown parking lots will also be addressed.  The rest of the impact will be mostly residential and neighborhood streets.  To find out if a street in your neighborhood will be impacted, you can view a map of all project streets on the city’s website.

The work on all of the project streets is only scheduled to last three days, and contractors will work with nearby residents and businesses to limit any impacts during the work.

A Type II Slurry Seal is a substantial maintenance process where a “slurry” of additional oil and rock are applied over the existing street to prolong the life of the roadway.  A good example in Hermiston of a street where a Slurry Seal has been applied is Highland Avenue between East 8th Street and West 11th.  That project was completed in 2016.

This year’s project list is part of an annual pavement maintenance program which systematically works through streets throughout the city.  This year’s projects will cost approximately $115,000, paid for with the city’s annual allotment of Federal Gas Tax revenues.
