People with diabetes need look no further than Good Shepherd Health Care System (GSHCS) for their nutritional education.

The National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE) announced that Katrina J. Larsen, a registered dietitian at the Diabetes and Nutrition Center at GSHCS achieved Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) status by successfully completing the Certification Examination for Diabetes Educators.

Candidates must meet rigorous eligibility requirements to be able to take the examination. Achieving certification status demonstrates to people with diabetes and employers that the health care professional possesses distinct and specialized knowledge, thereby promoting quality of care for people with diabetes. Currently, there are over 19,500 diabetes educators who hold NCBDE certification. With Larsen’s certification, GSHCS now has three Certified Diabetes Educators providing services at the Diabetes and Nutrition Center.

NCBDE is a national not-for-profit certification organization that is responsible for overseeing the certification program for diabetes educators and awarding the CDE credential to qualified individuals. The CDE program is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies.

Larsen has been a registered dietitian for nearly 10 years and joined the team at the Diabetes and Nutrition Center at GSHCS more than four years ago. She has been involved in educating members of the community on diabetes self-management through individual appointments and frequent group classes. The diabetes education program at GSHCS is recognized by the American Diabetes Association and provides comprehensive education and support to individuals with all types of diabetes. In addition to diabetes care, Larsen has specialized experience in the treatment of eating disorders and emotional eating. She has also worked together with the staff at the Diabetes and Nutrition Center to develop the ACT (Achieve, Conquer, Thrive) program for healthy lifestyle education and support.
