Janice M. Howland of Hermiston passed away on Nov. 29, 2018 in Hermiston at the age of 87.
She was born on April 18, 1931 in Clatskanie to Hawkin and Lottie Johnson.
Her Norwegian heritage was always a very important part of her life. When she was four years old her mother passed away. Her father and her two-year-old brother, Robert became the center of her life. Janice and Robert remained a formidable pair throughout the rest of her life. In 1950, she married Dale Chapman in Clatskanie and soon after, two daughters followed. In 1960 they moved to Hermiston to open Hermiston Auto Parts. Together they became a strong part of the community while building a very successful business. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, they welcomed to their family six grandchildren, who became the center of their world. They later divorced.
Janice later married Elton Howland. She enjoyed traveling the world to experience new places. Janice was very involved in the Emblem Club, Good Shepherd Hospital Auxiliary, Friends of the Library, and Smart Reading. She cherished time watching and cheering on her grandchildren in whatever activity they were involved in, and was blessed with the addition of 12 great grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughters, Sherry Thompson and husband Joe, Hermiston, and Peggy Stump and husband John, East Wenatchee, Wash.; brother, Robert Johnson, Portland; six grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
Janice was preceded in death by her husbands, Dale Chapman and Elton Howland; daughter, Nancy Karen Chapman; and her parents.
A celebration of life service will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Burns Mortuary Chapel, Hermiston.
A private family burial will be held at a later date at the Hermiston Cemetery.
