Coast elk hunters heading out for the second season starting Saturday, Nov. 20 should be aware of road closures due to damage caused by the intense rainstorms along the mid-coast last week, according to the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife.
Multiple mainline logging roads have experienced debris slides, road wash outs, and fallen timber. Most of the roads impacted are in the west side of the Stott Mountain Unit.
Werner Road (4000) at mile 2, Horner Ranch/ Gravel Creek (1701/200) Road, 4th of July Creek (400) Road, and Upper Euchre Creek Road have slides or washouts blocking them with no timeline of repair. The Siletz Gorge Road (open weekends only) fared well but some timber and fallen rocks may create blocked areas. Big Rock Creek, Green Mountain, Valsetz, and Valsetz railroad grade roads are currently open but could change based on unforeseen weather events.
Other adjacent wildlife management unit’s such as the Alsea and south Trask may have problem areas as well so have alternate routes in case you run into road blocks.

Second season coast elk hunters are also reminded to purchase their tag or redeem their Sports Pac elk tag voucher no later than the day before their hunt begins (so by end of day Friday, Nov. 19).
