The Hermiston City Council approved the final plat Monday night for the Hermiston School District’s Fieldstone Crossing subdivision.

The approval means the district can go ahead with plans to build more student-built homes as part of its Columbia Basin Student Homebuilding Program in which local contractors work with students to build houses in town. The students are currently working on their first home, a 2,050-square-foot, one-story, craftsman-style house with a large 676-square-foot garage. It’s the first of 11 homes that will be built on the 39 acres of land. The plan calls for the students to build one home per year.

The students will build homes on lots that are approximately 9,000 square feet. As part of the final plat approval, the district will install a fence along the Hermiston drain, as required by the Hermiston Irrigation District. The district will also have to install grading, storm drainage, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, service utilities and pave the streets. Streetlights will also be installed.

“We wish the school district luck on this project,” said Hermiston Mayor Dave Drotzmann. “It’s a nice addition to our education proecess.”
