Elementary schools within the Hermiston School District will participate in the Oct. 8 International Walk to School Day, a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day.

HSD elementary-aged students that ride a bus will be dropped off a few blocks from school to provide the opportunity for students walk. Community volunteers will be stationed at the dropoff site and assist students in arriving at school safely. Students who are typically driven to school by a parent are also invited to participate by walking from the alternate site.

“As a district, we are excited to partner with the Safe Communities Coalition and Mid-Columbia Bus Company to participate in the 2014 International Walk to School Day,” said Director of Operations Mike Kay.

The event was initially one day when it commenced in 1997, but it has since become the token event of a movement to raise awareness and improve safety of routes to school.
