Stanfield Man Dies in House Fire

A 59-year-old man died in what appears to be an accidental house fire in Stanfield Monday morning.

Stanfield fire and police officials responded to a house fire at 635 E. Harding Ave., in Stanfield around 9:21 a.m. When they arrived, they found the double-wide trailer house fully engulfed in flames.

Emergency personnel found Eldon Albert Hawley, 59, dead inside the residence. Umatilla County Medical Examiner Dr. Rudy Stefancik responded to the scene. According to Stanfield Police Chief Bryon Zumwalt, it appears to be accidental and related to the trailer fire and smoke.

Zumwalt said the cause of the fire is unknown, but appears to be accidental. According to Zumwalt, the fire started near the front porch area.

Also responding to the scene were the Oregon State Fire Marshall’s office, Umatilla County Fire District #1, chaplains from the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office and the Hermiston Police Department.
