A Two Rivers Correctional Institution (TRCI) inmate died unexpectedly late Saturday evening at a local hospital. As with all unanticipated deaths of state prison inmates, the Oregon State Police Criminal Investigation Division is conducting an investigation.

At approximately 10 p.m. on Nov, 30, inmate Larry Hurst, 67, was found unconscious in his cell in the Umatilla prison, where he was the sole occupant. Staff immediately initiated CPR and continued attempts to revive the inmate until emergency medical services arrived. The inmate was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 11:02 p.m.

Hurst entered Oregon Department of Corrections (DOC) custody on April 13, 2010, on five counts of delivery of marijuana to a minor and one count of second-degree attempted sodomy out of Deschutes County. His earliest release date was January 2015.

Next of kin has been notified. DOC will release more details when the investigation is completed. Preliminary investigation indicates no clear evidence a crime occurred that caused his death.

TRCI is a medium and minimum security facility in Umatilla that houses approximately 1,800 men in custody. It provides a range of correctional services and programs, including education, treatment programs, pre-release and transitional services, and work opportunities. TRCI opened in March 2000.
