Umatilla Resident, Dennis Phillips, Dies at 75

Dennis Paul Phillips died on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014 at his home in Umatilla at the age of 71 of prostate cancer.

He was born May 1, 1942 in La Grande to Donald Edward and Gertrude Marie (Karp) Phillips. Dennis was raised in Ordnance and Hermiston and graduated from Hermiston High School in 1960. He served in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1966. He worked at Marlette Homes for 38 years before retiring in 2005. His passion for golf was known by many and he had bragging rights to 11 holes-in-one. He was a member of Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church and Big River Golf Course.

Dennis is survived by his wife of 28 years, Glenda; stepdaughters/nieces, Teresa (Robert) Manning of Aurora, Colo., Christy Phillips and Denise Ratigan of Umatilla; stepson/nephew, Glen (Gina) Phillips of Hermiston; sister, Rosemary (Richard) Easton of Melrose, N.M.; brothers, Glen E. (Pam) Phillips of Livermore, Calif., and Nicholas (Donna) Phillips of Hermiston; grandchildren, Brandon Saucillo, Bryson Phillips, Joshua (Sammi) Phillips and Emily Manning; great-grandchildren, Cruz Rodriguez, Gage Bastian; and honorary great-grandchild, Josiah Rodriguez.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Donald R. Phillips; and grandson, Christopher (Myke) Salamanca.

Recitation of the Rosary was held on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014 at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Hermiston. Mass of Christian Burial followed. Burial with military honors followed at the Hermiston Cemetery.
