Voters will be asked to support a proposed Boardman Community Recreation Center this November.

Boardman Park & Recreation District (BPRD) President Karen Pettigrew announced today that the district has placed a general obligation bond in the amount of $12.390 million on the Nov. 4 ballot for voter approval.

The money raised by the bond will fund the purchase of six acres of land adjacent to the SAGE Center for the construction of Boardman Community Recreation Center. When complete, the approximately 50,000-square-foot structure is expected to include a 25-meter, 6-lane indoor swimming pool with slide and waves, a warm water therapy pool, gymnasium and bleachers with two basketball courts, a climbing wall, fitness center with equipment, aerobic room, year round indoor walking track, a multipurpose community room, lockers, concessions and storage.

The estimated cost to voters would be $0.9549 per $1,000 or $95.49 per $100,000 of taxable assessed value per year.

“Boardman has long awaited a swimming pool and recreation center to enhance the livability of the Boardman community,” said Pettigrew. “Boardman Park & Recreation District conducted community surveys, employer interviews and a comprehensive market analysis to determine that the construction of a recreation center would meet the needs of our growing community, promote community growth and benefit the health of Boardman’s residents.”

The district is inviting the public for a Kick-Off Celebration on Monday, Sept. 8 from 5:30–7:30 p.m. at the Harold Baker Pavilion in Boardman Marina Park. Free hot dogs, chips, soda and ice cream will be served. Information about the center will be made available.

Boardman Park & Recreation District was formed in a special election in July, 1966 and encompasses a northern portion of Morrow County. Their permanent tax rate of $0.2989 per $1,000 has provided development of a marina with public and rental boat docks, softball and soccer fields, horseshoe pits, a basketball court, campground and miles of popular, paved walking trails along the Columbia River.
