Two Hermiston City Council incumbents were defeated by their opponents Tuesday night while two others cruised to another term in office.
In a close Ward I race, challenger Jackie Linton beat incumbent Lori Davis with 44 percent of the votes (689 votes) to Davis’ 40 percent (629 votes).
In Ward IV, former councilor David McCarthy handily defeated incumbent Phillip Spicerkuhn, with 55 percent of the votes (864) to Spicerkuhn’s 24 percent (380).
In Ward II, incumbent Roy Barron won with 757 votes (48 percent) over challenger Stan Stradley’s 498 votes (32 percent).
In Ward III, incumbent Jackie Myers ran unopposed, receiving 1,070 votes.
In the two races for Umatilla County Commissioner, incumbent John Shafer and HollyJo Beers were the top two vote getters and will move on to face each other in the November election.
Shafer got 4,260 votes or 45 percent, followed by Beers with 2,436 (26 percent), and Rick Pullen received 2,120 votes (22 percent).
In the race to succeed George Murdock for Position 1, Susan Bower and Cindy Timmons will face off in November. Bower received 2,456 votes to Beers’ 2,431 votes (26 percent to 25 percent). Coming in third and fourth were Bob Barton with 1,636 votes (17 percent) and former State Sen. David Nelson with 1,073 votes (11 percent).
In the race for Municipal Court Judge, challenger Cameron Bendixsen defeated incumbent Thomas Creasing, 53 percent to 33 percent or 834 votes to Creasing’s 520 votes.
