The 2018 Hermiston High School graduation ceremony will be held at the Toyota Center in Kennewick, the Hermiston School District announced on Monday.
Six member of the Hermiston School District Board of Directors voted to move the graduation venue to the Toyota Center for 2018 with one member opposing the decision.
Graduation will take place the evening of Thursday, June 7. In August, the board tasked administration to provide options other than the Hermiston High School gym due to overcrowding with increasing class sizes. Two different surveys went out to parents, students, staff, and community members to provide feedback. A similar survey was conducted at the high school, to get better participation from senior students.
“The board has taken much time and study while making this decision,” said Board Chair Karen Sherman. “The voices that carried the most weight were the graduating seniors, their parents and school staff. Of all of the options holding graduation at the Toyota Center is the best choice at this time, providing a venue that is fiscally viable, makes it possible for everyone wishing to attend to do so and to be in a comfortable setting. We appreciate the input from the community and look forward to celebrating the Class of 2018.”
Are you going to bus people to Kennewick for those of low income or unreliable or no transportation? It would be a shame for some parents or grandparents to miss graduation for this reason.
