Two people were rescued from a burning building Tuesday night in Hermiston.

At 11:49 p.m., Umatilla County Fire District #1 was dispatched to a structure fire on Geer Extension in Hermiston. While enroute, dispatch informed the responding crews that there were still occupants inside the residence.

Engine 21 arrived to find a single-story, single-family dwelling with smoke showing from the front door. Law enforcement was already on scene attempting to extinguish the fire with bystanders and make entry.

Engine 21 went into rescue mode to remove two occupants from the home with assistance from Oregon State Police. After the occupants were removed, crews had the fire extinguished within five minutes. The occupants were transported by UCFD #1 to Good Shepherd Medical Center for smoke inhalation.

Units responding included Battalion Chief 21, Engine 21, Engine 22, Medic 21, Medic 24, Chief 23, Chief 22 and Umatilla Rural’s Engine 11 with a total of 14 personnel. The fire is currently under investigation.

UCFD #1 thanked the neighbors and law enforcement for their “heroic efforts and assistance. No doubt, they made a difference.”
