InterMountain Education Service District (IMESD) organized a Regional Board Conference on September 29-30 to provide opportunities for school board members to receive training about their role.

The conference is open to school boards of IMESD’s 17 component districts.

The event will be at Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton. It begins Friday evening, September 29th with dinner and a presentation by Haley Percell from the Oregon School Boards Association (OSBA), who will address “Legal Hot Topics and Questions.”

Followed by a continental breakfast on Saturday morning, September 30th, there will be five break-out sessions:

  • Superintendent/Board Relations, with Umatilla School District Superintendent Heidi Sipe & Board Members
  • Roles and Responsibilities/Effective Board Meetings, with IMESD Superintendent Mark Mulvihill, IMESD Board Chair Kelly Bissinger, IMESD Board Vice Chair Joe McElligott
  • Board Development, with Scott Rogers, OSBA Past President
  • Public Complaints, with La Grande Superintendent George Mendoza & Board Members
  • Regional Rural Advisory, with Emily Smith, OSBA Board Secretary & Treasurer

Friday evening sessions go from 5 to 7 p.m. and Saturday is from 9 a.m. to noon.

“Serving on a school board is tremendous commitment,” said Mulvihill. “Boards need support to be an effective team. Hosting a regional conference provides an opportunity for training in a local context. We are pleased to be able to offer this conference in our region and we have worked hard to ensure the topics are timely and beneficial to our districts’ school board members.”
