The Umatilla School District on Tuesday, June 11, celebrated the groundbreaking of a new intermediate school and a career technical education building.

The intermediate building is set to open in fall of 2025 with the CTE building to follow, according to a press release from the school district. The new facilities will offer educational opportunities and will support current students as well as anticipated growth in the community.

“These projects, along with essential site improvements, furnishings and equipment, represent a comprehensive plan to enhance the educational landscape of Umatilla,” school district Superintendent Heidi Sipe said in the release.

Students in fourth through sixth grade will attend the new intermediate school and will have a full-sized gym, varsity soccer field, and space for future expansion.

“This facility will not only provide our intermediate students with a modern, supportive learning environment,” Sipe said, “but also serve as a hub for community activities and growth.”

The CTE facility will serve Umatilla High School students. The high school’s shop space will be renovated into elective and classroom spaces for Clara Brownell Middle School, which will then transition to a seventh and eighth grade building.

The projects are a collaborative effort involving Alliance Management and Construction Solutions as the project manager, Design West Architects for architectural work, and Chervenell Construction Co.

The groundbreaking ceremony at both building sites featured remarks from Sipe as well as Kyle Clark, senior project manager for Chervenell Construction, and Lesly Claustro-Sanguino, school board chair. Attendees included parents, future students, school staff and community members.
