Barbara L. Tonning of Umatilla died on Aug. 5, 2024 in Provo, Utah at the age of 78.
She was born on May 23, 1946 in Wenatchee, Wash. to Wendell and Margaret Belvill.
Barbara was raised and attended schools in Montana. She was united in marriage to Donald Tonning on June 7, 1963 in Pendleton. They lived in Longview, Wash. for a short time before moving to Butte, Mont. in 1964 and returning to Pendleton in 1967. In the early 1970s, they moved to Hermiston before settling in Umatilla a short time later. She had worked as the district manager’s secretary for Farmers Insurance for 30 years when she retired.
Barbara was a member of the Catholic church. She enjoyed shopping, her dogs, knitting, playing games and working in her yard, and was an avid reader and cherished spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughters, Charmaine Tonning, Price, Utah and Margaret Costa, California; grandchildren, Shalena, Nathan, Andrew and Brandon; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Tonning; her parents; and a sister, Arlene.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, Aug. 16, 2024 at 10 a.m. at Burns Mortuary Chapel, Hermiston.
Burial will follow at the Sunset Hills Cemetery, Umatilla.
