Mary Francis Key of Hermiston, a bold and spirited wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on Sept. 8, 2025 at Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland, Wash. at the age of 88.

Born in Moro, Ark. on June 25, 1937 to Ben and Elizabeth Patton Reese, Mary lived a life full of energy, grit, and love – never one to hold back her opinion or miss a chance to make someone laugh.

She married Bobby “Gene” Key on Oct. 19, 1956, and together they built a life rooted in hard work and devotion. Soon after marrying they moved to California, where they owned and operated a gas station for over 20 years. After closing the station, they launched a construction cleaning business, continuing their legacy of determination and teamwork.

Mary was known for her sassy spirit, quick wit, and the kind of presence that filled a room. She spoke her mind, loved fiercely, and brought humor and honesty to every conversation. After Gene’s passing, she returned to Arkansas to be near family, later moving to Texas to be with her grandson. When he relocated to Oregon, she followed, spending her final years surrounded by the joy of her family.

She is survived by her daughter, Terry Key; grandsons, Bobby, Gary, Eric, and Kyler; and great-grandsons, Carson, Wyatt, Raylan, and Parker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby “Gene” Key and her son, Gary Key.

Mary will be remembered not only for her strength and loyalty, but for her sass. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew her.

No service is planned.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to plant a tree in her honor through Burns Mortuary in Hermiston.
