PENDLETON, Ore.-The Pendleton community is invited to a free suicide intervention training November 13-14 in the John Murray Building at 200 Southeast Hailey Avenue.
LivingWorks ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) is a two-day, hands-on workshop that trains attendees on how to intervene with someone who is having thoughts of suicide.
“Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training equips everyday people to provide life-saving support, helping rural communities like Pendleton bridge the gaps of stigma and limited resources,” said Amanda Walsborn, a LivingWorks ASIST Trainer, who will be facilitating the training with Shayne Arndt.
LivingWorks is the worldwide leader in suicide intervention training and the ASIST training, which consists of presentations, group discussions, interactive videos and work groups, is designed for anyone 16 and older who is ready, willing or able to help people with thoughts of suicide.
According to LivingWorks, “ASIST training strengthens your whole community, building a Network of Safety that helps you apply suicide first aid in many settings like schools, homes, workplaces, and as a part of formal caregiving roles.”
Professionals and volunteers who work with youth populations are encouraged to complete the training.
Objectives of LivingWorks ASIST
- Attendees will learn how to help someone with thoughts of suicide develop a safety plan for immediate safety, as well as how to connect with more help.
- Develop an understanding of how personal and societal attitudes about suicide affect someone’s willingness to seek help.
- Build the ability and confidence in attendees to provide suicide first aid.
