Umatilla man killed in Highway 395 crash

UMATILLA COUNTY, Ore.-A Umatilla man was killed and two other people were injured in a two-car crash on Highway 395 on November 2.

Oregon State Police (OSP), Hermiston Police and Umatilla County Fire District #1 responded to the head-on crash near milepost 3 in Umatilla County around 9:24 a.m.

According to the OSP, the crash happened when a southbound Volkswagen Passat, driven by Tyler John Garret, 24, of Hermiston, crossed into the northbound lanes of traffic and hit a Nissan 370, driven by Hadasa Esther Sanchez, 25, of Umatilla head-on.

Garret suffered critical injuries in the crash, and Sanchez sustained serious injuries. Both drivers were transported to the hospital.

Jose Vicente Sanchez, 24, of Umatilla, a passenger in the Nissan died at the scene of the crash, according to OSP.

Traffic on Highway 395 was impacted for about five hours as the OSP conducted its initial on-scene investigation. The official cause of the crash is still under investigation by the OSP Collision Reconstruction Unit.
