HERMISTON, Ore.-Good Shepherd Health Care System (GSHCS) will host a pregnancy education series starting November 14.

“What to Expect While Expecting” is the first in a series of in-person classes covering myriad pregnancy-related topics, including body changes, common discomforts, healthy habits, and even what to expect at OB appointments, as well as newborn care and postpartum recovery.

“We recognize the vital importance of accessible and comprehensive prenatal education and wanted to offer something unique and beneficial,” said Cherie Wilson, RNC-OB, Family Birth Center Nurse Manager at GSHCS. “We aim to facilitate a space where people can connect, share experiences, and build supportive networks, which is crucial for their journey ahead.”

Created to meet the growing needs of the Northeast Oregon community, “What to Expect While Expecting” is designed for parents to learn about the pregnancy journey and create support amongst each other.

For Wilson, who has 36 years of labor and delivery experience and has witnessed the bonds formed through childbirth classes, education and support are essential for expecting parents.

“The sense of community is so crucial during this life-changing event, and we’re committed to providing evidence-based information tailored specifically to the needs of our community,” said Wilson.

Classes, comprised of both lectures and small group discussions, will be led by JoDee Sharp, Maternal Wellness Specialist at the Family Birth Center (FBC) at Good Shepherd and a Certified Doula and Certified Lactation Counselor.

Nurses from the Good Shepherd Women’s Center and the FBC will also help lead the classes.

Future classes in the series will focus on different aspects of pregnancy and postpartum care, with other birth professionals sharing their expertise with class attendees, according to event organizers.

While “What to Expect While Expecting” is tailored toward pregnant women, the information presented is a valuable resource for everyone.

“We encourage spouses, partners, and support persons to attend as well,” said Wilson. “Their involvement and support is incredibly beneficial throughout the pregnancy journey.”

“What to Expect While Expecting” is November 14 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Conference Center 2 at Good Shepherd Health Care System located at 610 NW 11th Street in Hermiston.

Registration for “What to Expect While Expecting” is open online through Eventbrite.

“The ultimate goal of the class is to empower attendees with information, reduce anxiety, and help them feel more prepared for the journey ahead,” said Wilson.
