Dorothy Cooney Passes Away at 87

Dorothy A. Cooney of Hermiston died on Dec. 25, 2025 in Hermiston at the age of 87.

She was born on Jan. 21, 1938 in Grygla, Minn. to Frank and Hazel Stroble.

Dorothy was raised and attended a boarding school in Billings, Mont. in 1955. She joined the Sisters of Charity of Providence Convent, where she earned a degree in art and later became mother superior. She left the order and later married Charles Smith and they lived in Spokane, where Dorothy was a teacher for many years. They later moved to Umatilla. Charles preceded her in death and she later married Grant Cooney, and they have lived in Hermiston since.

Dorothy was an active member of Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church as a religious education teacher and taught Bible study with Grant for many years. She enjoyed arts and crafts, photography and church activities.

She is survived by her husband, Grant Cooney and his children, Brent, Chad and Seth Cooney; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Smith; her parents; and a sister, Delores and a brother, James.

A rosary followed by a funeral mass will be held on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church.

Private entombment will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace in Spokane, Wash.
