Don Pettit Passes Away at 88

On Jan. 9, 2026 our family lost an amazing man. Donald Gene Pettit was born on Dec. 12, 1937 in Valentine, Neb.

He married the love of his life, Wanda Earlene Chandler in 1956, beginning a loving and devoted marriage that lasted 69 years. In 1959 Don and Wanda moved to Pendleton, where Don worked for many years in local sawmills. Known for his incredible work ethic and skills, he served as a lead sawyer and was well respected throughout the industry.

Don was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing and spending time in nature. Above all, he cherished time with his family and friends creating lasting memories that will be treasured for generations.

Don is survived by his loving wife, Wanda Pettit; his daughters, Debbie Bates (Ron) and Marlene Hale (Rick); his grandchildren, Cory Bates (Jennifer), Meaghan Lee (Ryan) and Melissa Hale (Taylor); his great-grandchildren, Andi, Afton, Chloe, Lucas and Malakai; and his many nieces and nephews, all of whom held a special place in his heart.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Scott Pettit and Viola M. Olsen; his infant daughter, Tamara Pettit; and his siblings, Carol Moir and Charles Pettit.

Don will be remembered for his dedication to his family and the quiet strength he carried throughout his life. His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
