HERMISTON, Ore.-The Hermiston Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for Hortencia by Alondra’s Sweets, a new coffee shop and bakery on September 3.
“We’re thankful and grateful to Nabel for bringing this to our community,” said Val Hoxie, Executive Director of the Hermiston Chamber of Commerce. “It’s quickly become a favorite of ours. You can come in get coffee, hang out and work, and of course, the deserts are our favorites.”
Hortencia Calvillo, who goes by Nabel, runs the coffee shop and bakery at 508 E. Main Street that officially opened in May.
Chamber members, City officials, community members, and customers joined Nabel, and her husband, Juan, for the ribbon cutting.
“Thank you all for coming,” said an emotional Calvillo, before cutting the ribbon. “I’m very grateful and I feel very welcome.”
For Calvillo, who came to Hermiston from Mexico a decade ago, the opportunity to be a part of the business community and create an inclusive place for community members was important.
Before opening her shop, Calvillo delivered her baked goods to customers, many of whom became friends and were present at the ribbon cutting to support her new business.
“I did delivery before and I would stay and talk and get to know people,” said Calvillo. “My first customers are now my friends and I’m very excited to see all the people here.”
Hortencia by Alondra’s Sweets offers coffee and a variety of baked goods, from cookies to cakes.
According to Calvillo, the breakfast burrito is the most popular breakfast item, while the guava cheesecake and tres leches cake are two of the most popular sweet offerings at the shop, and strawberry matcha has been the most popular drink so far.
Hortencia by Alondra’s Sweets is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
