New Hispanic Radio Station Lays Down the Law

There’s a new radio station in town and it’s laying down the law.

KZLY, 99.5 FM on the radio dial, is Hermiston’s first Spanish-speaking station and its proprietor’s celebrated its grand opening on Friday with an event sponsored by the Hermiston Chamber of Commerce.

“Welcome La Ley 99.5 – our newest radio station in town,” said Chamber Executive Director Debbie Pedro. “Thank you for investing in our community.”

La Ley, which means ‘the law,’ is run by CEO Gaudencio Felipe Sanchez and President Jesus Torres, both of the Tri-Cities. The station can be heard from Yakima, Wash., to La Grande. It broadcasts music, news and information 24 hours a day. Eddie de la Cruz, chairman of the Hermiston Hispanic Advisory Committee, is working for the station as its public relations director.

“Our main goal is to help out and support the community,” de la Cruz said. “La Ley is here to stay a long time and we’re really excited.” He added that La Ley is a family-owned radio station and to drive the point home, Torres introduced his wife, mother, daughter and two grandchildren.

On Monday, Le Lay hired its first DJ and the station recently broadcast live from Hermiston High School during parent conferences.

Hermiston Mayor Dave Drotzmann was on hand for Friday’s grand opening and thanked Sanchez and Torres for adding another voice to the community.

“Any opportunity to spread the word about all the great things happening in our community is great,” he said. “This is another avenue to reach out to a significant part of our population.”
