The Hermiston Police Department announced the recent graduation of Captain Darryl Johnson from the School of Police Staff and Command (SPSC) at Northwestern University.

Johnson successfully completed the 22-week program held from March 9-Aug. 9.

This program, which was implemented by the Center for Public Safety in 1983, has graduated over 15,000 students both nationally and internationally. The SPSC provides upper-level college instruction in a total of twenty-seven core blocks of instruction and additional optional blocks during each session. The major topics of study include: Leadership, Human Resources, Employee Relations, Organizational Behavior, Applied Statistics, Planning and Policy Development, Budgeting and Resource Allocation.

The Center for Public Safety was established at Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois) in 1936 with the specific goal of expanding university-based education and training for the Law Enforcement Community. Since its inception, the Center has broadened its original objective and now provides a variety of courses and programs in the area of Police Training, Management Training, and Executive Development.

“The Hermiston Police Department anticipates a variety of benefits from Captain Johnson’s attendance at this program,” said Hermiston Police Chief Jason Edmiston. “As a 2007 graduate, I know how much time and energy the program takes. I was fortunate enough to attend the 11-week program in 2007 (in Idaho) but I was completely removed from the police department and my duties during that summer. Darryl attended the online course while still juggling his responsibilities here at work.”
