Blue Mountain Community College will welcome artist Brian Sostrom and his show, “Shadows of the West,” to the Betty Feves Memorial Art Gallery with an opening reception on Thursday, March 31.
The public is welcome to attend the reception, which runs from 4:30-6:30 p.m.
Sostrom’s paintings are inspired by nature, with cows, pigs, skulls and desolate landscapes as subject matter.
“I love the imagery of nature but the focus more specifically is the paint itself,” Sostrom said.
Using acrylic paint, Sostrom builds up layer upon layer over plexiglass to create atmospheric, ethereal paintings in subdued hues. His paintings have a physical presence, which vary with light and the angle from which a piece is viewed. His work has been part of numerous group shows throughout Oregon and Washington. Sostrom’s show in the Betty Feves Memorial Art Gallery will be his first solo show.
Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, Sostrom graduated with a bachelor of fine arts degree from Washington State University, with a major in graphic design and a minor in painting. He has worked in illustration, graphic design and the video game industry. He currently lives in Carnation, Wash. For more information on Sostrom’s work, visit his website.
