The recent All-City Recycle Event on April 9 attracted nearly 300 people who took advantage of the opportunity to rid themselves – at no cost – of old tires, paint, appliances and anything else that can be safely disposed of, according to Hermiston’s Parks & Recreation director.
At Monday’s Hermiston City Council meeting, Parks Director Larry Fetter went over the event’s results with the council. According to Fetter, a total of 83.47 tons of material was disposed of during the recycle event, up from 61.18 tons a year ago – a 38 percent increase
Nearly every category of items recycled saw an increase from the year prior. For example, 16.28 tons of metal was turned in this year compared to 8.47 tons a year ago. People turned in 20.52 tons of concrete on April 9, compared to 11 tons last year. A total of 6.24 tons of appliances with Freon were turned in, while last year only 1.59 tons of appliances were turned in. There were 1,350 gallons of paint turned in compared to 1,275 last year.
The council agreed to continue the event on an annual basis.
