Blue Mountain Community College signed its very first women’s soccer recruit during a signing ceremony this Friday in the McCrae Activity Center on the Pendleton campus.
Hermiston High School soccer star Tyra Carter officially signed her letter of intent to play on the inaugural Timberwolves women’s soccer team during the ceremony alongside new head coach Art Mota.
Carter, who will be a 2016 graduate of HHS, was the first player who committed to play for the new program during recruitment by Mota. Since that time, 10 other women have been recruited by Mota to the Timberwolves soccer program, which will start practice for the 2016 season Aug. 1.
The BMCC soccer field is currently closed for renovations so that it can be brought up to Northwest Athletic Conference collegiate standards. Updates are expected to be complete by July. The soccer program received a boost with grant awards from the Wildhorse Foundation and the Pendleton Foundation Trust to help fund start-up costs of soccer at BMCC.
The Pendleton Foundation Trust awarded the program $14,000, while the Wildhorse Foundation granted $5,000 for equipment. In addition, Pendleton Bottling Company, which runs the local Pepsi distribution, will donate funds to purchase and install a scoreboard on the soccer field.
