The Hermiston Police Department is currently recruiting for volunteer reserve police officers. A reserve officer functions in much the same way as a full time police officer except in a volunteer capacity. Reserve officers must be willing to volunteer a minimum of 12 hours per month or 36 hours every three months.

To be a reserve officer, individuals must meet the minimum qualifications of a police officer set forth in Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and training (DPSST) administrative rule 259-008-0010:

• Must be at least 21 years old
• Must be a high school graduate or equivalent
• Must not have any felony or disqualifying misdemeanor convictions
• Good moral and ethical character
• Must be a U.S. Citizen

Final appointment is subject to passing all of the following:

• Medical and/or psychological examination
• DPSST approved written test
• Fingerprint submittal
• Thorough background investigation

Interested individuals can apply by contacting the Hermiston Police Department at 330 S. First St., to pick up an application or downloading the application from the city of Hermiston website.

If selected, a reserve officer candidate must be willing to attend a Reserve Officer Academy that will be approximately two evenings per week and all day on several Saturdays for a period of roughly five months.

Closing date is April 3rd, 2017 at 5 p.m.

“Historically, we have had great success with hiring from our reserve officer program,” said Hermiston Police Chief Jason Edmiston. “Of the 27 officers we have now, 9 or 33 percent are former HPD reserve officers. I have asked our department to seek out people they believe will fit well with our internal culture here at HPD as well as fit well for this community we are so fortunate to serve.”
